American flight controllers are increasingly seeking additional employment and reporting ill, as they continue to work without pay during the government shutdown, the transport chief has announced.

"These professionals are wearing thin," the official informed a news outlet on the weekend, as certain aircraft were grounded on the Californian coast due to personnel deficits.

After the federal closure on October 1st, flight controllers, who are considered essential workers, were told to continue performing their jobs without pay.

But some have been absent, leading terminals to halt or reduce their flight operations, which has added to setbacks caused by climate and other issues.

Over 3,000 American flights were delayed on the weekend, and the secretary stated he anticipates the situation to deteriorate further.

"I observe the pressure," Duffy remarked in an discussion on a weekend program, noting that he had met with multiple professionals to hear their concerns directly.

"They are pursuing second jobs, they're out there looking, 'Can I drive Uber, am I able to secure another source of income to make ends meet?'" he continued.

The secretary further mentioned that on the previous day 22 alerts at airfields said travel would be held up due to a shortage of workers - one of the highest after the closure started.

The American federal closure reached its 26th day on Sunday, making it the second-longest shutdown in the past.

Duffy has consistently cautioned that flight authorities would reduce the number of aircraft in the sky if there is a deficit of security staff.

In his conversation, he declined to respond directly when asked if it was safe to travel by air in the US, and instead made a direct appeal to controllers.

"I need my controllers concentrating on the airspace, not on the monetary matters at their households," Duffy said.

On Sunday, some planes were grounded at Los Angeles International Airport due to employee deficits, leading to interruption at the fifth most active airport in the country and among the most crowded in the globe, as well as additional travel stretching north to the city of Oakland, California.

The FAA notice was issued at 8:45 AM local time on the weekend. Numerous trips were operating normally by midday.

Travel at Newark Liberty International Airport, however, were delayed an average of 82 minutes due to staffing shortages, and the authority indicated DFW, the second-busiest airport in the US, could encounter difficulties from reduced staff later in the day.

The agency advised passengers in the state to check with carriers about revised departure times.

The situation precedes the third match of the World Series, which is scheduled in LA on Monday night, and approximately four weeks prior to the Thanksgiving holiday, among the peak times to travel by air in the United States.

Strain on American aviation contributed to ending a federal closure in 2019. At the time, the halt had entered its fifth week and affected flight services, including pilot training.

It prompted several air traffic controllers to remain absent on the identical date on 25 January 2019, temporarily stopping movement at LaGuardia Airport in New York.

That same day, the former president, who at the time was in his first term as leader, agreed to sign a temporary funding measure, bringing an end to the federal closure after thirty-five days.
