Alleged Stalker Questioned: 'But Suppose I Am Madeleine?'
A female charged with stalking Kate McCann reportedly recorded her a recorded message which asked: "what if I am Madeleine?"
The defendant, 24, who a jury heard has consistently asserted she was the vanished Madeleine McCann, and Karen Spragg are on trial indicted with pursuing Kate and Gerry McCann between June 2022 and February this year.
On Monday, the court was told call records and evidence recovered from phones documented Ms Wandelt consistently demanding Madeleine's mother for a genetic test throughout that period.
Madeleine's case in 2007 - at the age of three during a trip in Portugal - is considered the most covered investigations and continues to be unsolved.
'I Am Not Seeking Money'
Another recorded message, played in court, recorded Ms Wandelt stating: "I understand I'm overweight and plain like Madeleine used to be, but I know what I believe."
While one recording of Ms Wandelt's recordings with Mrs McCann's recording expressed: "Suppose there is a slight possibility that I'm her? What happens next? Is that not crucial for you?"
"I don't want money, I have a living here in Poland, I just want to know," the message continued.
The panel was advised that via emails, SMS messages and phone calls, Ms Wandelt asked for a biological test, transmitted childhood photos to her phone in a bid to demonstrate a similarity to Mrs McCann's vanished daughter, and asserted to have "memories" from a youth with the McCanns.
The investigator, a data specialist with law enforcement who gathered the information, told the court there "didn't appear to be any replies" from Mrs McCann.
Ms Wandelt furthermore communicated with close associates of the McCanns, as per the phone records.
On 9 October 2024, the father answered a phone call from Ms Wandelt to his wife's phone, declaring she had "a wrong number."
On that occasion Ms Wandelt left a voicemail on Mrs McCann's answerphone saying "I won't give up and I will prove my position."
The court heard the co-defendant developed a association via internet with Ms Wandelt before accompanying her on a trip to the McCanns' home in the county in December 2024.
Communication data revealed Mrs Spragg had reached out using WhatsApp to Mrs McCann to state the media had characterized Ms Wandelt as "mentally unstable" but that she should be taken seriously in the period before the appearance to the village, the county, in December 2024.
The court learned communications between the two defendants, in that autumn, discussing attempting to get Mrs McCann's DNA samples from her trash or from cutlery at a eating establishment.
"We need to take action," the co-defendant advised Ms Wandelt.
On the occasion of the trip to their home, the defendant dispatched a communication which said: "We are sitting outside the McCanns' house with our vehicle dark resembling investigators. I had hoped to do this with another person I hadn't anticipated I would be doing that with the McCanns."
The case continues.
