Cameron Norrie earned the most important victory of his career by rallying from a set down to defeat top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz in three hard-fought sets in the second round of the Paris Masters.

While he had before overcome Alcaraz on two occasions, this triumph represents Norrie's initial win over a current world top-ranked player.

"Enormous. Incredibly significant for me," said Norrie, who is now the newest British man in history to defeat a world No 1. "Bouncing back from a physical setback last year, I lost in the initial match of qualifiers here. I just sought to enjoy my tennis in the latter part of the year. To achieve a win like this, it's the greatest win of my tennis journey, my initial victory over the world No 1 and probably the strongest player in the world right now."

The British player, positioned 31st globally, also halted Alcaraz's impressive run of nine finals in a row and 17 straight Masters 1000 victories, which was the top run of outcomes in the young champion's early career.

Contest Breakdown

Alcaraz seemed to be moving confidently to a win early on as he sailed through the opening set. Yet, Norrie steadily battled back into contention by delivering with greater precision and dragging the Spanish opponent into lengthy, demanding points. His unceasing steadiness and reliability slowly took its toll.

Through most of the match, Alcaraz performed well on serve but he had difficulty to find his timing with his rally strokes. The 22-year-old seemed especially uneasy hitting his primary weapon, which has been the best shot in the sport for much of this year, producing 29 forehand miscues and a combined of 54 unforced errors. On the other side, the British player offered Alcaraz minimal unforced errors, sustaining his consistency, athleticism and power the entire contest while performing well on serve and choosing his moments to force himself inside the baseline and strike effectively.

Professional Context

After dealing for a long time due to a major physical setback and struggles with his performance, the tennis professional dropped as low as No 91 this year. Having reached the advanced stages at the grass-court major and the Roland Garros fourth round after that, this triumph highlights the veteran's improvement as he attempts to come back to the top 20 and even higher. Alcaraz, in spite of his remarkable achievements, is yet to figure out how to display his top form indoors.
