We are verifying images and video circulated this morning that purport to show the aftermath of a alleged car bomb explosion that Russian officials state killed a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that exploded and that he later died of his injuries. An investigation is under way.
Our starting point to verify the location from which the pictures originated relied on posts indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby apartment building captured in the video.
Locating additional buildings, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed the exact location the footage were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were recent and that the visuals had not been manipulated.
