French authorities to begin stopping migrant vessels in Channel after British demands
France has agreed to start intercepting migrant vessels in the Channel, after months of insistence from the UK.
The change in policy follows the Prime Minister wrote to the French leader asking him to support the initiative and stating there currently "lack any effective preventive measure" in the maritime passage.
French maritime police have been authorized to stop the small boats at sea, but only before they've picked up their passengers, according to authoritative statements.
French police have infrequently acted to stop the overcrowded boats leaving the coastline because it is viewed as excessively high a risk to both officers and individuals.
"It is crucial that we deploy these methods this month... We have no effective deterrent in the Channel."
Currently, a French naval police spokesperson states officers will start intervening at sea, with the objective of protecting human life.
Notably, the official excluded the use of nets to intercept boats, which had earlier been reported as a potential technique to disable the propellers of the boats.
The decision to intervene at all is a major advancement, coming after a short-lived change towards a more aggressive approach this warmer season, which ceased when the previous government official left office.
That was highlighted in the summer month, in the run-up to a summit between the Prime Minister and President, when authorities were observed wading into the sea to damage the sides of a boat.
Now French authorities will again be permitted to intercept boats prior to they collect asylum-seeking passengers from the beaches of northern France, although it's uncertain how the small boats will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are currently postponing the commencement of intervention operations and the people-smuggling gangs will be seeking methods to adjust to evade interception, as they have done so often in the past.
UK immigration authorities and the Prime Minister's office have been approached for comment.
