The Reze Arc Movie Leads the U.S. Box Office in Opening Weekend
Did Sony repeated their success? In the wake of the success of the hit anime Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which brought in over $600 million globally, the new movie Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc has officially crossed the $100 million threshold globally, hitting a global total of $108 million during its debut. The film beat out the horror sequel Black Phone 2 ($12.9 million) in its second weekend in movie houses, as well as the film Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere with Jeremy Allen White (nine million dollars).
Strong U.S. and International Earnings
Directed by Tatsuya Yoshihara, the movie is a direct continuation of Chainsaw Man’s first season. It earned over $18 million in the U.S. after a strong $5.2M Saturday box office and $4.5M Sunday performance. Internationally, the MAPPA-produced movie earned $14.7 million across 46 international territories, bringing its global earnings to $60.4 million under Sony (over $43 million international, $18.2 million stateside). The studio has not yet revealed its official box office total.
Comparisons to Previous Blockbuster Anime Movies
Specialist agency White Box Entertainment had earlier commented, contrasting the movie's expected results to Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which earned $34M in the domestic market in the year 2022 and started with a similar $18 million stateside. Reze Arc’s debut weekend is in line with that marker, while its $108 million global gross is now positioned just behind Jujutsu Kaisen 0’s $166.6M total earnings. While it is improbable this Chainsaw Man film will earn the numbers of blockbuster Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, it remains a major victory for Sony.
Marketing Strategies Boost Success
The studio and its partner Crunchyroll have successfully utilized community involvement to drive their supremacy at the anime box office. The movie's advertising push launched at Anime Expo Los Angeles in the month of July with a discussion featuring MAPPA, unique experiences, and photo opportunities with Pochita, followed by a significant involvement at New York Comic Con featuring never-before-seen content, lotteries for fans, and further MAPPA discussions. Additionally, there was an private showing for enthusiasts for general audiences and popular figures too after the last day of the event.
What’s Next
2025 stands as a big year for anime, and for the studio, which has an additional animated movie releasing in the coming months in the film Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in November.
