Residents in Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Mbeya, Mwanza reported an unusually slow start to the day, with a large number opting to stay home due to doubts about if the demonstrations would proceed.
The protests were organized to call for political reforms in the wake of October's post-election unrest which left an unknown number of people dead.
Authorities Admit Use of Force
The authorities have admitted employing force against demonstrators, claiming that some groups were attempting to overthrow the regime.
On Tuesday, reporters observed nearly empty streets in the commercial capital, Dar es Salaam. This was a stark contrast to the city's usual weekday bustle.
Although quiet, the atmosphere remained tense.
Heightened Security Nationwide
Security vehicles were seen driving along primary thoroughfares and junctions, while personnel were stationed at key points, including around key public infrastructure.
Through online platforms, organizers advised followers to remain vigilant, suggesting any demonstrations were unlikely to begin until the afternoon. This communication mirrored previous protest calls in Tanzania, when turnout increased later in the day.
Motorists who ventured out reported regular stops at security checkpoints, where police interrogated motorists about where they were headed.
Official Position and Prohibitions
Authorities have not provided specific statements on the heightened security measures or on the planned protests.
The government has prohibited the planned protests and called off independence anniversary events, advising the public to remain at home.
"The prevailing mood is one of quiet tension as people choose to stay home."
