Unearthing the Secrets of the Mine Shaft
When she finds Max in the psychic realm dubbed Camazotz, Max reveals she is taking refuge in a grotto that Henry avoids at all costs. By leaving the lens cap on a spyglass pilfered from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the source of fear lies outside of the cave. When she lines up her view to the cut-out, she and Max suddenly fall into a deep mine shaft.
There, they witness a child version of Henry come across an man who is hurt and scared. As the boy offers aid, the man panics and shoots, striking Henry in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly asks tearfully. The answer is affirmative, but the act involved more than a defensive killing.

A Naval Mystery and A Spy's Mission
This backstory explains the 1943 event, which reportedly teleported a warship into a realm dubbed the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who came back in a catatonic condition with an altered blood type.
The captain's son, a young Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this dimensional breach in the Nevada desert. One of his scientists took experimental components to sell to the Communist spies, who were eager to begin their parallel research. That traitor in the cavern is the one who stole the materials.
The Briefcase's Contents
Based on what is known about Brenner's work, the briefcase most likely held some of the unique blood type. As shown, Henry is already bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon contact with the blood, leading to the origin of his telekinetic gifts—abilities he would inadvertently transfer to the test subjects in Hawkins Lab.
Alternatively, the container could have held dark matter that was destined to travel to the Hawkins lab, where it maintains the stability of the parallel world. The stage play explains that young Henry ended up in the Abyss, returning after half a day with a new blood type and personality. From then on, he battles the control of a dark entity, reminiscent of how Will was controlled by the Mind Flayer in season 2.
Confronting Terror
His lasting fear linked to that memory shows how utterly horrifying the event was for him. Even as he orchestrates the Hive Mind and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him remains. The villain weaponizes terror, and the narrative points to a climactic battle between him and Will, who has deliberately faced his greatest terrors to fortify himself.
His confrontation has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. Crucially, Will now knows what Vecna himself fears, which could provide a decisive edge in the endgame conflict to come.
